Fair play theme for Kiwi Sport
Olympicidealsof fair play, under standing, participation and achievement were the focus of the Olympic Kiwisport day held at the Ohakune Primary School last Wednesday. More than 300 children from Ohakune, Ngamatea, Orautoha and 7 the Maungarongo fcura Kaupapa schools took part, with 19 sports students from Wanganui running a number of sports activities with help from teachers and parents. The focus was squarely on fair play, and not winning and losing. 7 In total, 204 fair play certificates were givenout with 19 children chosen as 'fairest players'. They each received Ohakune Tyres and Energy Centre 'Firesfone Fairplay" gifts. As part of an opening ceremony, the children recited the Fairplay Sports Charter of New Zealand: "We at our school agree that when playing sport we will enjoy ourselves, play within the rules, respect the referees and umpires, respect the opposition and their supporters, be gracious winners and dignified Iosers, play hard but play fair." The Wanganui students are working on the Sport Wanganui Training Opportunities Programme's yearlong sport, fitnes^ and leisure course.
