Ohakune Garden Club report

Winners of the Ohakune Garden Club's annual competition for club members' gardens were Nita and Bruce Wilde. Second were Trevor and Noeline Reynolds, and third were Sheryl and Ray Wilson. Ten gardens were nominated and thejudges, fromthe Raetihi Garden Club, commented that all showed good colour scemes and very healthy plants. The Ohakune Garden Club also administers the Civic Pride Award for the best town gardens as viewed from the street. The Ruapehu District Council provides a granfr for prizes. This year the gardens were judged by Mr D and Miss I Gilbertson from Wanganui who were holidaying in the area. The results of the best Ohakune Gardens Civic Pride Award were: first: Sheryl and Ray Wilson, Tawhero Street; second, Bill Te Karu, Goldfmch Street; third, Brenda and Sonny Chan, Arawa Street.

The rose bowl trophy and vouchers were presented to the winners by Ruapehu deputy mayor Bob Peck, at the official opening of the Dahlia Show. The February meeting of the Ohakune Garden Club was held at the home of Sue Deadman, Karioi. Prior to the meeting, members visited the garden of Tania MottRyan at Rangataua where there was enough daylight left for a wander around Sue's large and interesting garden. Much of the business part of the meeting was taken up with organisation for the annual dahlia show on 1 March at the Lions Den. The raffle was won by Tania Mott-Ryan. Results of the monthly club competition: Dahlia: 1 S Wilson, 2 S ROkstadt, 3 L McQuarrie; Flower of choice: 1 F Frew, 2 S Deadman, 3 S Wilson; Shrub of Choice: 1 F Frew, 2 L McQuarrie, 3 F Frew; Arrangement: 1 C Dowsett, 2 S Rokstadt, 3 L McQuarrie.
