Last of the fishery volunteers?
John Dobson, plumber, works on the porch roof of the Waimarino Acclimatisation Society building in Seddon St, Raetihi. Volunteers are working to restore the building which was shifted to beside the Plunket rooms. The building is still used for the society's monthly fisheries management meeting. Mr Dobson said while he had been happy to start working on the building, he was disheartened by the recent court case which could make way for some Maori to fish in some places without a licence, and without having to aghere to catch limits and fishing methods. He said it was annoying that so much work had gone into developing and maintaining the f ishery and to be working voluntarily for the society while thousands of dollars were being spent on lawyers' f ees to appeal the court decision. "I don't think I'll be volunteering my time again," he lamented.
