National Park pool popular

One of the more popular lessons at National Park School in summer is the daily swimming periods. All 60 or so pupils learn to swim and, being a covered pool unlike others in the area, lessons are not interrupted by bad weather. They also enjoy a slightly extended season from Labour Day to Easter. The 14m x 6m pool is only one metre deep but it is also enjoyed by adults and children after school and well into the evenings and at weekends. Protected from the weather, the pool

could remain open for longer except for the cost of heating the water, according to school principal Robert Collie. As it is last month' s power bill came to over $600. The pool is owned by the school and administered by a pool committee. It recei ves no funding from the Ruapehu District Council. Some costs are recovered by charging admission for after-school and weekend use but with National Park's small population and, with the hire of a key costing $2 and $30 for the season, the pool operates at a loss even during the summer months.
