Art & craft group may sign off
The three remaining financial members of the Waimarino Art and Crafts Society have decided to retire at their forthcoming annual meeting, which could mean the demise of the society. The society is still financially sound with a healthy bank balance and has been meeting regularly at the Junction in rooms leased from Main Trunk Rail Ohakune. Advancing age and pressure of work have moti vated present members to retire, said a spokesperson. The Society was formed by the Reverend P Walker - in' 1969 with Mrs F Flynn elected first president. They gained membership of the New Zealand Association of Art Societies in 1970. The aim of the society has been to provide a meeting area for local artists and craftsmen and the running of exhibitions of theirwork, the last of these being held, in August 1992 when some 30 exhibitors' work went on show at the Junction. All that is necessary to continue the Society' s life would be the enrolment of lew members and the foruation of a new executive, said the spokesperson.
