Farm course
Eight people started a 44-week land-based agricultural training course in January, which involves mainly handson training and some classroom tutoring. The course started with an introduction to farm safety, first aid and operating machinery. The students will have the option of beef or sheep farming for the course. The course is being run by Peter and Merilyn Feickert from Valley Road, Raetihi and agricultural tutor Derrek Priest from Wanganui. Currently the programme involves four and a half days out in the field and one half-day in the classroom. The programme will include one week block courses coveringcomputers, fencing, farm forestry, shearing, woolhandling, small motors and welding. Some of the students are from family farms, some are keen to learn the ropes from scratch and others want to broaden their knowledge and firm-up their hands-on-skills.
