Trioman diverted after heavy rain
The annual Waimarino Trionman multi-sport event was held last Saturday, despite heavy rain. Fifty four entrants included individuals and teams, from Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North, Wellington and the Waimarino. Competitors cycled, kayaked or canoed and ran the course which started at Raetihi with a 27km cycle to Pipiriki, followed by a paddle down to Matahiwi. After lunch they ran about eight kilometres to the top of the Matahiwi Track onto Papahau Station. Because the rain made the last part of the track too slippery, the course was altered this year and competitors ran back down the Matahiwi Track, then cycled to
the alternative finish at Jerusalem. The aim of the Trionman event does not involve winning, but taking part and supporting and encouraging all who take part. "I've competed in a few events like this but I've never known an atmosphere quite like it," said one competitor, "friendly, well organised, supportive with organisers making sure everyone is OK along the way." The youngest competitor this year was six year old Nikoh Blues Mareikura. Nikoh and her older sister, Amco, cycled from Raetihi to Pipiriki with their father Tom. The organisers held a prizegiving and social function in the evening with many planning their strategy for next year. Results next week.
