Ohakune Hotel Lion Round Ruapehu Classic

The organisers of this year's Classic have confirmed that the cream of New Zealand road cyclists are again expected to line up on 15 March for the annual 160 kilometre race around Mount Ruapehu. The race leaves at 10.30am and travels from Ohakune to Waiouru, up (and down) the Desert Road to Rangipo, across in front of the Chateau to National Park, and then back to Ohakune. The winners are expected to cross the finishing line at the Ohakune Hotel at about 2.30 in the afternoon. As usual, the organisers are expecting a top line field, with riders like past winner Paul Bishop, Olympic team members Ric Reid (highest placed New Zealander in the road race at the Atlanta Olympics) and Gary Anderson, as confirmed starters. "In recent years we have had a line up of 80-90 starters and we are confident that this year's field will be of a similar size," said Warrick Funnell, on behalf of the race promoters, the Wanganui Cyclfng Club.
