Ruapehu population drops

Ruapehu district' s resident population has dropped by almost 2000 people since 1986, according to figures released last week by Statistics New Zealand from last year's census. Most of the drop occurred between 1986 and 1991, so the rate of reduction is slowing down. As at 5 March 1996 the resident population of the district was 16,742, down 0.7 per cent (121 people) from the 1991 census and 10.5 per cent

(1982 people) from the 1986 census which was then 18,845. The number of occupied dwellings fell by 3.5 per cent ( 1 88) since 199 1 to 5631. This is down by 155 from the 1986 figure of 5598: The total number of people in the district (not necessarily resident) on census night 1996 was 18,329 which is down 1.2 per cent (255 people) from the 1991 figure of 18, 104 and down 7.0 per cent from the 1986 figure of 19,470. -
