Dogs worry sheep

Dogs were on the loose in Raetihi last week and some managed to get into a holding paddock at the sale yards and worry a large number of ewes which were part of a draft of 300 awaiting the sale set down for the following day. Three ewes died in the paddock between late Wednesday evening, 26 February, and Thursday morning. The sheep were left stressed, many with their necks, eyes and bellies gouged and severe wounds to their legs.

Two auctioneers from Williams and Kettle, stock and station agents, were on hand to see the end result. Both Brad McCoubrie and Harvey Falloon expressed their anger at the number of times (and the number of dogs) that appear to be allowed to roam around the streets. They estimated that the current value of the 5-year old ewes injured and killed would have been $43. They added that it was likely more sheep would die from wounds sustained or infection.
