Close one for Bulletin
The power cut almost led to the Bulletin being published a day late for what would have been the first time ever. Readers of the Bulletin who saw in last week's edition a short news item about the power shutdown in Ohakune and Raetihi last Moriday may have wondered how it came to be included in a newspaper that is usually being printed in Wanganui on Monday evening. After being told by Transpower that power might not be restored until 1 0pm, staff arranged an alternate printing time on the Tuesday, as it would have been impossible to finish the paper and deliver the artwork to Wanganui in time. "But when power was restored at 7.01 pm we rushed back to the office knowing that, if we could get the artwork for the paper down to Wanganui before midnight, it would be printed overnight and deljvered as usual the next morning," said acting editor Dennis Beytagh. The artwork was finally finished at 10. 10pm and driven do wn to Wanganui by Mr Beytagh and handed over to the printers at 11.30pm. Observant readers will have noted three spelling mistakes in the news item last week, that were due to the late hour, tired staff and extra pressure to meet the deadline. Mr Beytagh commented that editor, Robert Milne, picked a fine time to take a holiday, given that he also missed the previous Monday publication day upset which saw the Bulletin 's production computer capacity cut in half.
