Power cut explained
The Bulletin contacted Transpower's North Island Divisional Manager, Russel Stewart, last week and received the following explanation of last week's power cut. The shutdown occurred at the Ohakune sub-station where the national grid's 1 10,000 volts are converted to the 1 1,000volt system used by King Country Energy and Powerco. It was caused by a tap changer being tripped out on one of the transformers at the substation at 3.19pm. This resulted in an automatic shutdown of the other transformers to avoid overloading and damage. On-site staff in Ohakune were able to report what they deduced was the fault and reported it to Transpower's technical staff in Bunnythorpe. On the basis of this report Transpower estimated that fixing the problem would take 5-6 hours and announced initially that power may not be restored until 9- 10pm. However, when Transpower' s technical staff arri ved in Ohakune by helicopter from Bunnythorpe, they were able to fix the problem rather more simply than anticipated and power was restored at 7.01pm.
