Referendum appeal

A group of people who were witnesses to the shootings and were forced to flee and hide from the gunman in Raurimu on Saturday 8 February, have written to the Governor General and the Prime Minister calling for a national referendum on New Zealand' s gun laws. Justice Thorpe is currently reviewing the gun laws and seeking submissions from the public but this group, some of whom have been traumatised by the experience, feel that a national referendum would better reflect the views of all New Zealanders. In addition to the call for a referendum following the deaths by shotgun, they are also calling for a review of the Mental Health Act with particular reference to the treatment of psychiatric patients.
