Application declined
Transit New Zealand has declined a request from Wanganui District Council to have Whanganui River Road declared a special purpose road. I Transit' s Authority considered there was not a high I enough proportion of tourist traffic on the road to justify I special purpose road status. I "Around three quarters of the traffic on a road needs to I be tourist related before Transit will consider declaring a I special purpose road. In this case the proportion of tourist I traffic was just too small. If and when the Whanganui I River road meets the criteria the road will be considered I for special purpose road status," says Authority chairman I Bob Browne. I A high proportion of tourist traffic using a road is the I main criteria for a special purpose road declaration. Other I criteria include that the road is below state highway Istandard and passes through an area where the rating I potential of the surrounding land is significantly lower ■ than the maintenance costs of the road.
