Glider club seeks members

Among the many 'happenings' over the recent Waimarino A & P Show weekend were training flights being offered by the Ruapehu Gliding Club at Wards airstrip in Valley Road, Raetihi. For a week's membership fee of $30 would-be glider pilots could take to the air with pilot instructor Phil Gotlieb of Ohakune, for a 30-minute 'hands-on" experience at the controls of the Club's Grob 109. dual-control motor-glider. With a 60ft wing-span the Swiss-made fibre-glass glider reached altitudes of 5,000ft (above sea-level) which is 2,000ft above Raetihi. The $62,000 Grob is only one of two in New Zealand. The 80hp motor is designed simply to get the craft airborne and to reach a safe altitude, from where the thermals take over. With a membership of only eight, of whom three - Phil Gotlieb, Keith Kui and Ian Heappy - are qualified glider pilot instructors, the Ruapehu Gliding Club is seeking new members.
