Ruapehu College report
Ruapehu College students have started the school year with enthusiasm after achieving well in their exams. Some exceptional results were realised by Steven Sue (95% for accounting) and Neil Bradley (95% for mathematics). • New teachers have arrived: Mr Rodgers, Mr Perkins, Mr Petrov, Mr Behrens and still to arrive frorh the Shetland Islands, Mr Bryce. • New student leaders have been appointed: head girl Rebecca Clarke, deputy head girl Marcia Wood, head boy Daniel Forster, deputy head boy Greg Tuthill. Student whanau leaders have also been elected, two boys and two girls for each whanau. All leaders were attending a leadership camp at Kuratau last week. • The third form groups are attending socialisation camps over the next three weeks. This enables the students to get to know each other and learn to work as a team. • Tennis championships started last week. Entries were up this year and the fine weather should see the championships completed this week. Ei Leen Voon won the girls singles title from Margaret Mowat in the first round. • Students have been given a chance to buy student ID cards for $4. The students receive a laminated card which enables them to get discounts for transport, skiing and many other activities. • Education outside theclassroom continues, as students have been on field trips to enable them to gain a greater depth of understanding than could be achieved through classroom activities. History classes visited the Army Museum, agricultural science classes have a steady programme of visits to farms and other agricultural points of interest. • The clubs cycles are starting this week and Smokefree Stage Challenge practices will be under way then. • Diving competitions were held last Friday with Tui winning the first inter-whanau competition. • Athletics preliminaries were held last Tuesday. Competition is fierce this year. The full athletic sports day will be held todayr Tuesday 18 February. All parents and friends are invited to come and support their favourite whanau and children. Weka leads so far with 124 points, Kiwi is very close behind on 123 while Tui and Huia are trailing but it's early days yet!
