Ulysses Club 'Mashed Murphy' rally

Between 70-80 members of the Ulysses Motorcycle Club came from all points of the compass within the North Island (Whangarei/ Hawkes Bay/Welliogton/New Plymouth) last weekend to attend the 'Mashed Murphy' rally in the Waimarino. The spectacle of so many well-maintained motorcycles and motorcycle-sidecar combinations was made all the more impressive as the machines glistened and glinted in the fine sunny conditions which predominated over the weekend. There are over 3000 Ulysses club members throughout New Zealand and these rallies are held all around the country to raise money for local causes through such things as sausage sizzles and the sale of badges. The profits from this rally will go to the local Lions Club to allow under-privileged children in the Waimarino to attend a camp in Taupo. As well as supporting such causes Ulysses Club members came to the Waimarino last weekend to enjoy themselves ... and this they did.

Busy programme They assembled outside the Courthouse in Ohakune on Saturday and were welcomed by local Ulysses Club member number 169, Ian Stewart of Raetihi. From Ohakune they travelled with police escort-to the Raetihi camping grounds where a sausage sizzle was provided. At 2pm half of them boarded a bus and travelled to Tangiwai for a tour of the Winstone Pulp International mill. From there they returned to Ohakune and visited the Ohakune Club before heading back for 'Happy Hour' at the Waimarino Club in Raetihi where they later had dinner and then, after a 7.30am breakfast on Sunday morning - also at the Waimarino Club - they dispersed and headed back home. The weekend was a "tremendous success" and "we think we've raised quite a lot of money but won' t know exactly how much for some days ... probably by next week" said Ian Stewart.
