Show lacked public support
The 1997 show was successful in all but public support. A very disappointing crowd turned out on a glorious sunny day on Saturday. Sport Ruapehu had this year run a "Top Teams Ruapehu Romp" as the main attraction but participation was very poor. Kath Campbell as organiser put a lot of effort into setting up a rural obstacle course and those who entered teams had a lot of fun. More teams would have been a greater crowd pleaser and more rewarding for the organisers. The horse section ran well with quality horses and ponies. Champion Hack was local rider Christine Reynolds on "Rose Red". Reserve was Betty Brown on "Valentino". Supreme Champion pony was "Berkeley" ridden by Taumarunui 's B Stephensen. Cattle classes were well supported this year and the points cup went to John and Helen Hammond. Sheep entries were a bit disappointing in numbers but quality was high. The band Barak Zamar gave an entertaining performance and the local line dancers gave a very polished performance. One highlight for the kids was the pet parade and a variety arrived for judging. Dogs, cats, rabbits, a goat and even a mouse. Top prizes went to: "Moonbeam" the black lamb won first and the pet lamb cup for S Lilburn. "Scotty" for J McLaughlan was best dog. Rabbits "Benjamin" and "Bunny" for the Hemapo family won first in the "other pets".
