Covenant may solve Cornelius dilemma

Replacing the Cornelius bridge in the Ruatiti Valley may be com pleted in a matter of months, if a compromise suggested by the council chief executive, Cliff Houston, is accepted by , the landowner. Mr Houston told the Waimarino Community Board at their meeting on Wednes- ! day that if Mr Cornelius agreed to a covi enant being placed on his title whereby he agreed to accept responsibility for future maintenance of his bridge, then the council would be in a position to go ahead with its . contribution to the bridge replacement.

He told the board that the original proposal, to contribu'te to the bridge replacement on the condition that the road be delegalised, may never happen because there was likely to be many objections to the road closure. If the landowner agreed to the covenant idea, then the solution could be worked through without any other parties being involved. He said he would prepare a report on the option to the council. No resolution was taken by the board, but it appeared they were in agreement as there was no opposition to the idea voiced.
