Whanganui Park fire risk high

The fire risk in the Department of Conservation Wanganui Conservancy is high after recent hot and windy weather and staff are urging people to take care with cigarettes and fires. Anyone wanting to light a fire on DoC land is reminded to contact a DoC office or a local authority for a permit. Canoeists on the Whanganui River are also . reminded to "slip', slop, slap" to avoid sunburn ruining a river trip, and use sunglasses to protect the eyes. The river is at its lowest — level for the summer and is running clear, say staff at both Taumaranui and Pipiriki . T raffic on the river has dropped from its peak but is still moderate. The road between Pipiriki and Raetihi is dusty from road works and drivers need to take it slowly.
