Standing room only at speed shearing

Waimarino' s annual speed shearing session saw some standing almost outside for a glimpse of the action at the Ruapehu Hotel in Raetihi on Saturday night. Starting the show was the novelty event where one competitor rides a bicycle pedalling to provide the power for his team mate's shearing hand-piece. There were 20 teams entered including a number from out of town, one being a German tourist who pedalled for local man Trevor Condon. Duncan Metekingi hosted the show, thanking the Ruapehu Hotel and Don Windle for their support and Tom and Marg Martin from Rangitikei who judged the competitions. The main event saw a close competition between time, quality and cleanness of shear. Organisers remind people that the Waimarino Shears is to be held on 15 February. Results: Novelty event: 1st Jim Edmonds and Randal Haitana, 44. 1 seconds; 2nd Ronnie Jensen and Akima Renata, 44.2; 3rd, Nigel Brown and Robert Hawira, 44.3. Speed shearing: Nigel Brown 33.6; 2 Robert Edmonds 35.6; 3 Frazer Edmonds 36.6.
