School starts for new staff
Introducing Ruapehu College's new staff for 1997, from left Chris Petroff, Brendon Perkins, Abie Swart, Grant Rogers and Ralph Behrens. Mr Petroff, from England, is teaching economics and maths and provides learning support. He comes to Ohakune after eight months' teaching in Auckland after arriving in the country. Brendon Perkins, from Christchurch, is a first-year teacher who will take history, social studies and English. Abie Swart, from Capetown, South Africa, has been in New Zealand six months and will teach social studies. Grant Rogers has moved from Timaru and will teach science, biology, physical education and outdoor education. Ralph Behrens has left the Auckland rat race, having sold his bed manufacturing business, to return to teaching after a 10-year break. He will teach maths, English and English as a second language.

Introducing David Willis, Raetihi School's newest teacher, who is taking a Standard Two class as his first-year assignment. He comes from Torbay, Auckland. He has so far found Raetihi to be a great place with "wonderful weather" making it good to get out of Auckland.
