Volcano quilt a winner
Atthebiennialnational quilt sym posium held recently in Hamilton, Ohakune seamstress Merrilyn George had three quilts accepted for the exhibition, and at the awards ceremony was presented with three awards. She won the "best wall quilt*' with a prize of $750 for 'Nga Whare Maunga' Two (Mountain houses), and two merit awards in the suitcase exhibition to travel around New Zealand were awarded for the quilts 'Horopito My Home' and 'Nga Whare Maunga'. The wall quilt, machine pieced, with photographic transfer and hand quilting and couching, depicts the mountain in eruption from the wharepuni. The free for'm triangle surround, includes clippings from the Ruapehu Bulletin and Ruapehu College students' poetry transferred to fabric. Within the wharepuni is a peace symbol.
