IIIegal dumping problem follows council service changes

Several instances of illegal dumping in highly visible areas have resulted in cleanup operations costing ratepayers money and despite signs at those sites, find the areas are fouled again within a few weeks. So says Ruapehu District Council chief executi ve officer Cliff

Houston. He said the council is disappointed that information it has recently provided about the dumping of rubbish in places other than landfills or transfer stations is not being heeded by some within the district. "The council intends to actively pursue and pros-

ecute any identified offenders who dump refuse at places other than landfills or transfer stations," he said. The landfill sites at Ohakune, Raetihi and Taumarunui currently accept general rubbish excluding hazardous substances between 12pm to 6pm on weekdays and 9am to 6pm on Saturdays and Sunday during daylight saving periods. The sites are closed at 5.30pm during standard daylight periods. Transfer stations at Kakahi, Owhango, National Park, Matiere, Orautoha, Karioi and Pipiriki, and landfills at Ohura and Ongarue are available for use at all times for domestic refuse.
