Family reunion has a sports flavour
A family gathering with a differ ence was held for members of the Arahanga family on 27 December. Up to 100 people gathered for a week of sports and games in Ohakune and Raetihi. Numbers attending have grown from the previous, first event, held in 1992. Sports included touch rugby, netball, volleyball, swimming, indoor basketball while in the evening quizzes, talent shows, skits and plays were held. A 'top-town' type competition was also held with a variety of novelty competitions. One of the family used their aerobies
instruction skills to warm up the family at the start of each day. As well as being a chance for the children of the families to get to know one another, it is an opportunity to encourage all in their education, employment and in obtaining a reasonable level of fitness, said family member, Honey Winter. There were even trophies awarded, for best team as well as for family participation, support and encouragement, and a children' s trophy. Grandmother Julia Arahanga, in her 80' s, attended the reunion, despite suffering from health problems.
