Owhango rubbish station open

Owhango 's new rubbish transfer station is open for business. The station is located at the old dump site off State Highway Four. The transfer station i s part of the solid waste management strategy for the district and a nation-wide trend of closing older dumps and using more environmentally acceptable methods of disposing rubbish. The site has been fenced and landscaped with native shrubs. However, residents, the council and the contractor engaged to do the work have been di sappointed that part of the screen fence and some shrubs have been removed from the site. Anyone who observes suspicious activity is urged to contact the council. Rubbish is to be stored in large skip bins which will initially be emptied at least once a week; The council said that to protect the environment potentially hazardous substances such as agricultural chemicals and waste oils can' t be dumped at the transfer station. Bulky items such as whiteware and car bodies will not be accepted at the site but can be disposed of at the Taumarunui or Ohakune dumps.
