Women graduate from Maori teaching unit

Two Waimarino women graduated from the Rangahaua Te Rangiakura Maori teachers training unit in Wanganui last Friday 29 November. The women, Vanessa Katene from Raetihi and Dale Clode (Hawira) from the Parapara, were accompanied by a large group of supporters including family and friends. Ms Katene, 22, is currently at Raetihi School and will continue to teach in the bi-lingual unit with Colleen

Hansen. Dale Clode, 21, is at present living in Otaki. Colleen Hansen, Agnes Mareikura, Korty Wilson and Lila Pakinga have all graduated from the unit during the six years it has been operating. Agnes works part time at the Mau. ngarongo Kurakaupapa, Korty teaches at Ohakune Primary School and Lila teaches at Waiouru. Mrs Hansen, who heads the bi-lingual uni t at Raetihi , said she would like to see

more from within this region attend the Wanganui unit. This would allow the current unit to expand, giving more children a chance for bi-lingual learning. M s Katene said about 400 attended the graduation ceremony. She thanked all who travelled to Wanganui to 'awhi' her, saying she was overwhelmed and appreciated their support very much.

Correction Last week's Bulletin article on the Orautoha Pet Day incorrectly listed Dorothy Scarrow as a judge, instead of Dorothy McNie.
