Court says take sign down

A man has been convicted for failing to remove an illegal sign located at the corper of State Highway 4 and Kaitieke Road as required by a Ruapehu District Council abatement notice. Stepheh Carr of Wades Landing Outdoors and Whanganui River Jet was convicted in the District Court on Wednesday 27 November. The court ordered Mr Carr to remove the illegal sign in no more than seven days from its decision. Cliff Houston, Chief Executive of the Ruapehu District Council, said the council had brought the action against Mr Carr to ensure the provision of the Ruapehu District Plan are administered in a fair and even-handed way. Mr Houston said the council had requested three other illegal signs in the vicinity be removed and the persons responsible for those signs had complied with Council' s requests. He said Mr Carr was requested by the council on at least three occasions to remove the sign but refused to do so. It would be unfair to allow Mr Carr to keep the illegal sign when others had co-operated with the council said Mr Houston. Mr Carr was remanded for sentencing by the District Court on 5 February 1996.
