Coroner calls for Forestry Corner work
Forestry Headquarters Corner at Karioi should be realigned, or at least signposted as a dangerous corner. That is the view of the coroner who carried out the inquest on the death of a Lower Hutt man in September. Dean John Parkins died in a crash at the corner, 12.5km west of Ohakune on State Highway 49 at about 7.15am on 4 September 1996 from massive head injuries after his vehicle left the road and flipped a
number of times. Coroner Paul Brown recommended "that the police bring to the attention of the appropriate authority responsible for the stretch of roadway where the accident occurred of the dangerous contour of the road and to request the authority to take remedial action which may include either signposting the danger or undertaking road realignment works to prevent further accidents."
