Owhango transfer station site chosen

The proposed Owhango Refuse Station is expected to be operational in December 1 996. The transfer station is to be located on the. current Owhango dump site. The dump will remain open while the transfer station is being constructed and will then be closed to the public, the Ruapehu District Council advises. The dump area excluding the transfer station will be reinstated to pasture before next winter. The transfer station will provide refuse disposal capacity for domestic refuse from Owhango and the surrounding area. However, large items will need to be transported to Taumarunui or Ohakune dumps. The glass collection bins provided by the Taumarunui Lions Club will be relocate'd to the transfer station site. The construction of the transfer station and subsequent closure of the landfill will enable the dischargeof refuse to land to oease. The refuse from the transfer station will be removed regularly and disposed of at Taumarunui landfill. Thus the potential for adverse effects on the local environment on Owhango is minimised, states a council report.
