Waimarino golf
Waimarino Golf Club' s closing day, 10 November, saw the annual clash between the president's team and the club captain' s team. The rivalry between the president John Hammond and club captain Wayne Marsh had beejn intense all year with Wayne having beaten John on two occasions during the year. John was out for revenge. Both had been scouting out the talent, looking at the form over the previous weeks, and neither was prepared to give an inch. So with all things taken into consideration the draw was made by random choosing of cards. At the end of the draw Wayne had a satisfied grin from ear to ear. On the second hole Wayne devised a cunning strategy to put John off his gamfe by driving his ball long and under a tree. He then had an air shot when the tree grabbed his club and made him miss the ball. This caused John to roll around the ground for a' while. The desired effect was gained as Wayne went on to win the game on the 17th hole. It was discovered later that this trick had been used by other members of the club but for less reward. Air shots were had by Helen Hammond, Neil Black and Tania Brown. But they were playing for the president's team so it back fired on them as the club captain' s team had been warned of the likelihood of such tactics during the game. Winners and losers were: captain' s team first, Sarah Lind thrashed Pat Mcllroy; Terry Geraghty murdered Brian Hays; Nancy Winter
annihilated Goldie Fraser; Ken Crossan scared the hell out of Jim Corbett who left for the hospital; Jenny Murdie made mince meat out of Heather Cranston; Steve Gray blew Neil B lack off the course; Lyn Drinkwater caned Helen Hammond; Gary Imhoff was unbelievable against Paul Creedy; Barbara Dempsey was awesome against Gillian White; John Mcllroy thumped Graham Lind; Glenda Whale chewed up Faith Wise; Joe Martin had Con Heinold running for cover; Ross Brown was cheated out of the win by Alan Murdie and halved his match; Carol Leary was unlucky to lose to Jill Martin, Derek Brown was ambushed by Mike Fraser, Hugh Geraghty only just missed out beating Barry Drinkwater; Dwayne Marsh was nobbled by dirty tactics and bullying by Mark Hays who thought he was playing for the club captain' s team. It' s a shame his efforts were wasted. Bryce Henry felt sorry for Neil Leitz and let him win his first game for the year. Don Windle who arrived late didn't get to play anyone but judging by his score he can play for the president's team. All in all a very good day for the club captain' s team with a 1 3&1/2 to 5 & 1/2 victory. Winners of the indi vidual prizes for the day were Seniors Gary Imhoff on 43 points; 2nd Graham Lind 42 pts; 3rd equal Barry Drinkwater and Steve Gray on 40. Juniors, 1st John Mcllroy 44pts; 2nd Mark Hays 43 pts; 3rd Joe Martin 41 pts. In the ladies top golfer of the day was Tania Brown on 49pts; 2nd Sarah Lind 46 pts; with 3rd Jenny
Murdie on 41 pts. The main season may be over but on Thursday nights starting at 4.30 pm is Twilight Golf. The club invites anyone along to these evenings to join in and have fun. This week, 21 November, is a bashers' night. Anyone who hasn't played golf before can come along and play for a cost of $2 and win prizes. Clubs can be supplied if needed.
