Day out for kohanga reos
The Mo Te Whanau Kohanga Reo of Raetihi took their children on a day trip to visit the Te Mangaweka Kohanga Reo at Mangaweka on Tuesday last week (pictured at right). The various Kohanga groups throughout the region regularly visit each other to share ideas, to allow the children to mix with others and to help them gain confidence in reciting their whakapapa. Te Katoa Kohanga Reo from Rata also visited Mangaweka. Rata and Mangaweka are of the same Rohe, so they joined forces as Tangata Whenua. (Rohe is one' s sub-tribal area and Tangata Whenua refers to the host family or home people). Mahinarangi Mahia is the kaiako for Rata and Rikki Tipu teaches at Mangaweka. Aonor Potaka is their administrator. After the welcome, the children put their reo skills to the test and this was followed by waiata. The children express themselves in Maori and English. ' Following lunch, the children visited the Rangitikei River and went on a short bush walk taking in views of a waterfall and dam. The children were accompanied by their kaiako, Rose Wilson and Cindy Hiroti, and their kaumatua Buddy Hawira.
