Raetihi dump options on the agenda
■ aetihi's dump will be full by July or August 1"^ 1997, at the present rate of dumping, and the IV Ruapehu District Council is investigating a range of options to manage the situation, or replace it. The issue will be discussed at the Waimarino Community Board meeting this Thursday. Options are: • The dump's life could be extended by diverting rubbish trucks to the Ohakune dump, leaving the Raetihi one to take rubbish dumped from cars, trailers and utilities. • The final contour of the site may be able to be changed to increase its capacity. • After it is closed, a transfer station costing $100,000$200,000 could be set up with the rubbish trucked to Ohakune. • Establish a dump somewhere between Ohakune and Raetihi which would also be used for Ohakune rubbish once the Ohakune dump is closed. • A further option is to "cease to provide a disposal facility at Raetihi". Other rubbish issues to be discussed on Thursday include collections in the Ohakune and Raetihi commercial areas. Environmental asset manager Suzienne Slegers has recommended that the council "facilitate the voluntary use of mobile garbage bins and skip bins by business operators" in conjunction with kerbside collection "if consultation confirms that a demand exists". The proposal is the council' s answer to concerns of business people that the kerbside collection of official bags is inadequate for commercial use.
