Long fire service marked

Ohakune V olunteer Fireman Richard Hemara became a member of an elite group on Saturday night with the presentation of his gold star medal, marking

25 years' continuous service to the Brigade. Around 200 family and friends gathered at the Ruapehu College hall to celebrate with Mr Hemara

who became the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade' s fifth gold star recipient. The presentation was made by Clyde Cunningham, vice-presi-

dent of the United Fire Brigades Association, who was one of a number of dignitaries to attend the evening. Mr Hemara was praised for his contribution to the brigade which has included holding the positions of motorman and secretarytreasurer, as well as "work behind the scenes." Ruapehu mayor Weston Kirton presented Mr Hemara and wife Nina with silver goblets, "in recognition of your contribution to the community and the Fire Service, both in Ohakune and the surrounding districts." Another presentation, by Ohakune Fire Chief Max Martin, was a pewter statue depicting the 'then and now' of fire fighting.
