School cultural festival soon

The Raetihi School Cultural Group will be hosting the third primary school' s cultural festival in November. It's practise time for the group from the bilingual class and the girls have been working hard towards getting their waiata poi just right. Their kaiako (teachers) Colleen Hansen and Vanessa Katene, organise the event. Mrs Hansen said that the idea behind the festival is to give the children from other rural schools within this region a chance to show their cultural skills, in either verse, theatre, waiata, action song, waiata poi, kapa hake or oratory. Performances can be in either English or Maori

but must convey Tikanga Maori — the traditions of Maori. It is also a time to give the children confidence, a chance to meet others and to show off their talents to family and friends. Schools invited are Taihape, Waiouru, National Park, Kakatahi, Otoko, Ranana, Pipiriki, Maungarongo Kurakaupapa, Ohakune and all kohanga reo learning centres within the region. Anyone wanting more information can contact the school, 06-385-4402 and ask for either Mrs Hansen or Ms Katene.
