Accommodation figures confirm eruption impact

Occupancy rates for Ruapehu commercial accommodation in July 1996 averaged 26 per cent, down from 42 per centforJuly 1995 and 47 per cent for July 1994,reportsthe Ruapehu District Council marketing manager Bruce Rollinson. Hotels and motels were both 34 per cent occupied in the month. "The effects of the eruption this year are obvious in these figures. It will be even more obvious when the information for August and September becomes available. Accommodation on average in these months has traditionally run at between 60 - 70 per cent occupancy," said Mr Rollinson. This information is provided by Statistics New Zealand on a contract basis to the Ruapehu District Council. Employment in all accommodation types for the Ruapehu area for this month was 200 full-time equivalents, most in the hotel/motel category. Turnover for the month was $1.6 million or 1.4% of the national total.
