Off the edge
No fear for Sarah Byrne as she is lowered over a cliff on the Mangawhero Stream by fellow-Red Cross folk on Saturday — she was getting used to the feeling as it was the third time through the exercise. A number ofRed Cross personnel from their 'East West Region' which includes Manawatu, Wanganui, Taranaki and Hawkes Bay, converged on Ohakune for a weekend of exercises, including cliff rescue (pictured). Scenarios included the cliff rescue, where the patient has suffered a leg injury while tramping, a bush search where two trampers had lost their way, and a helicopter crash on the mountain where a TV3 chopper crashes after f lying through an ash eruption cloud. To add another dimension to all the exercises, the ash eruption continues all weekend, meaning all personnel had to wear dust masks whenever they ventured outdoors.
