Waimarino hosts King Country golfers
The Waimarino Golf Club hosts the annual King Country Golf Championships, sponsored by AFFCO, this week, from 46 October. About 230 golfers will compete over the three day s, starting on Friday with the women 's competition over 36 holes. On Saturday and Sunday the men will compete over 72 holes. The competition is stroke play and is run on a teams event format although there are a number of individual prizes as well. The main teams event is the Pittams trophy which is competed for by a team of four women and six men
from each club. This competition runs over the 36 holes of the women 's and the first 36 holes of the men's competition. Teams competing come from throughout the King Country. As well as the W aimari no Club the follo wing, Taumarunui, Waitomo, Te Awamutu, Stewart Alexander, Pio Pio Aria, Taranui, Waiouru & Kawhia golf clubs make up the field. The tournament rotates around the four host clubs Waimarino, Waitomo, Taumarunui and Te Awamutu. each club prides itself on its organisation and its course preparation with the aim to provide a successful tournament for those competing.
The range of ability of the golfers is quite marked with the lowest handicapped golfer entered at present on two and the highest on 36. Because of the size of the field the golf course will be closed to all club golfers and green fee players over the three days of competition. The organisers would like to welcome all those involved in the tournament and hope they enjoy their golfing in the Waimarino.
