Level 12 Media Studies Poutamatia 40 college students accompanied by Mrs H Winter, Mrs D Edwards, Miss N Williams, Mrs M George and Mr R Lane went down to Wanganui for the weekend 6-8 September for Poutamatia, a careers hui. Its purpose was to expose young people to the huge range of careers possible. College Army girl Melissa Schlegel was back to school last Friday after a week in the army. She spent the week in Waiouru Army Camp together with 81 other secondary school pupils from all over the North Island. Melissa got to ride in army tanks, went for early morning runs and did a lot of press-ups. "It opened my eyes a bit more to other career-op-

tions," said Melissa, who thought that it was a really good experience. Practical clothing sew-in The fourth and fifth form Practical Clothing Certificate class stayed the night at school last Thursday with Mrs George. They got an extra six hours' of sewing and among lots of other things learned to sew in zips. In-service course Teachers of Te Reo Maori from Taranaki and the W anganui di strict j oined up at the college on Friday 13 September for a weekend in-service course on assessment. Singing teachers In assembly on Friday the teachers sang "Love Changes Everything". The idea came from the new music teacher, Mrs Pienar, as one way of raising the profile of music in school. The teachers have challenged the third formers to do something similar in assembly. College vs the Golden Oldies The Golden Oldies and their equally colourful supporters came to the college on Friday 13 September to play rugby against the First XV. It was supposed to be played in four quarters but ended up in five. In the fifth, both teams had all their players on the field. After a fun game refereed by the principal, Mr Lane, no one knew the score but it was approximately 35-35 with a win of course to the

Golden Oldies. At half time Mr Lane was stretehered off by Mr P Sutton and Mrs E Carmichael. He made a miraculous recovery and returned to the field to referee the remainder of the game. Interwhanau The four college whanau competed against each other intwo interwhanau quizzes last Wednesday. The subjects were maths and science. The maths quiz was won by Huia followed by Kiwi, Weka and Tuk Huia also won the science quiz but this time followed by , Tui, Weka and Kiwi. The interwhanau winter sports competitions are on this Wednesday. Netball under 18's At the start of September a Waimarino under-18's representative netball team was formed. This is the first time a Waimarino under18's team has been formed in the last five years. The girls travelled to Wanganui to compete against other regional representative teams. The team, with Ruapehu College students Raana-Ellen Mareikura (captain), Shey Rangiihu, Lynette Haitana, Marcia Wood, Cheryl Condon, Chaana Morgan, Nicola Brell, Aisha Kumeroa (vice captain), Amy Hiscox and Tineke Edwards, i s coached by Eli Hamlin and Marcia Opatu. On Friday 13 September the Under 1 8 ' s travelled to Rotorua to compete in the Kurangaituku, a college teams tournament.
