LETTERS

Residents lefft holding the (trash) can « Once again we have rubbish left on the streets due to the Ruapehu District Council's irresponsible attitude. It is pointless not collecting the non-official bags and or putting stickers on them to the effect they will not be collected. The official collectors come from Taupo and couldn't care less about what is left behind. These bags for the most part are put out by visitors to the area, they will-never see these left bags or the mess from them as by the time they return, responsible citizens who are sick of the mess will have removed them. Those visitors who have left these non-official bags couldn't care less if they are left behind. Bags left behind are broken into by possums, dogs, cats etc., the contents are left strewn all over the place, It was pointed out to the council earlier this year that mess would be left behind with the introduction of the new rules regarding rubbish collection. We, the citizens and ratepayers of Ohakune, are left holding the can and the mess of strewn rubbish around our town. Contractors are acting on council's instructions, but the fact remains it is petty and highly irresponsible for this refuse to be left as fodder for the animals. It is time the Ruapehu District Council realised Ohakune has a different requirement as during the ski season it is a tourist town and those who come, visit and leave, it is the citizens who suffer any problems or mess left behind. This left rubbish makes a mockery of the district' S "clean green" image that David Vince (Ruapehu District Council environmental health officer) referred to in his letter to me on 29 August
