Red tape ties up bridge renewal

Replacement of the Karioi Do main Road Bridge is not a cer tainty, with Transit New Zealand red tape still to be unravelled. In June the Ruapehu District Council resolved that the bridge would be upgraded as part of its subsidised roading programme, but the council has no funds in its bridge renewals category of Transit New Zealand funding, which now comes fromTransfund, the Waimarino Community Board heard at their September meeting. Also, the council

is not allowed to shift subsidy funds from bridge maintenance to bridge renewals. "There is also no guarantee that Transfund will subsidise the bridge (renewal) as it is anuneconomic roading facility," said roading asset manager Gerard Eckard in his report to the WCB. He said a submission would be made to Transfund for their approval to replace the bridge, to confirm that a subsidy is available, and so that funds can be transferred from the bridge maintenance account.
