Rangitikei schoolboys blitz through 1996 season

Waimarino's top schoolboy nigby players added to their success by taking their representative team to victory in the Manawatu - Rangitikei - Taranaki - Wanganui toumament recently. The last time the Rangitikei team won the 65-year-old trophy was in 1 967, and only four times prior to that. While Manawatu and Taranaki are union representative teams, Rangitikei is split from its Wanganui union. They played and won six games this season, starting by beating Wairarapa Bush by an incredible90-0. Next they beat Central Hawkes Bay 41-26, then Horowhenua 38-1 1. Following was the toumament series, which they started by beating Taranaki 20- 1 7 in a hard-fought match which saw them come from behind twice, the first time from being 1 4-0 down at the end of the first 20 minutes. They clawed back to 15-14, then Taranaki kicked a penalty (17-15), then Rangitikei scored a try. They then grimly defend this late final lead for about five minutes of extra time. Next they beat Wanganui 59-0, then Manawatu 24-0. George Williams scored six tries for the team, Gordon Cribb three and Chris Joumeaux, one.
