Ferguson guest at sports awards

A "real local flavour" to the Ruapehu Sports Awards is promised this year, according to chairman of the Ruapehu Sports Festival and Sports Awards, Graeme Cosford. Guest speaker at the awards dinner will be canoeist lan Ferguson, holder of four Olympic gold medals who earlier this year was honoured as New Zealand' s Olympian of the century. Ian was born in Taumarunui and did his early schooling at Matapuna Primary School. "We are delighted to have Ian as guest speaker. He is a specialandenduring sportsman and I'm sure that he wi 1 1 continue tfie high standard set by our previous speakers," said Mr Cosford. Nominations for the awards close on 4 October. Ruapehu Construction Limited are the major sponsors of the awards with a number of sponsors for individual awards, including the Ruapehu Bulletin.
