Raetihi - Ohakune rugby rivalry almost at an end
The name Ohakune/Karioi in rugby is no more, following the announcement this week that club members had passed a motion to voluntarily wind up the Ohakune Karioi Rugby and Sports Club Incorporated. Meanwhile, the Raetihi Rugby Football Club is to meet on Wednesday 1 8 September to vote on
whether to wind up their club and join forces with OKRSC. Their committee has recommended to say yes to the amalgamation. Raetihi will be celebrating their 100th year of rugby next year. Ohakune Karioi club secretary Karl Christensen said the moment when the motion to wind up the club was quite sad, with all members present
staying very quiet after it was tabled. He said he moved the motion and Noni Brown seconded it. Ruapehu would be the new club to be formed. The two clubs have courted each other for several years but had not been able to get around the historical rivalry between them until now. Mr Christensen said they hoped to hold the
inaugural annual general meeting of the new club sometime this month. He said the name of the new club was yet to be decided as was the site of the club' s base. The Ohakune Karioi club came into being with the .1979 amalgamation of the two clubs represented in the name.
