Volcano alert level remains at two
Ruapehu's scientific alert level remains at two, despite the ashfall on Turoa' s slopes overnight Sunday. Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences manager Brad Scott said yesterday that the weekend activity was consistent with the level' s definition of "continued minor eruptive activity". "Level Three is defined as 'significant local eruption in progress' and the current activity is well short of that at this time," he said. Mr Scott said there had been two short-lived active periods on Sunday evening, the first between 5.44pm and 7.00pm, when an increase in seismic activity was recorded which coincided with observations from aircraft of a plume trailing downwind about 50km. FROM PAGE 1 A second smaller seismic sequence occurred between 11. 01 and 11.30pm, which produced the Turoa ash fall. "Further minor eruptive activity is expected from Ruapehu and further larger events are a possibility ," he concluded.
