More Maori land rates written off

More than $16,000 in rates on urban and commercial Maori land were written off last year. Ruapehu District councillors discussed the matter at their last meeting, questioning the write-offs. Cr Graeme Cosford said he thought the policy was to write off rates on undeveloped rural land in multiple ownership. Finance officer Carl Perrin said the rates were uncollectable because each involved between 50 and 300 owners, most of whom could not be found. He said the properties were not occupied and had no improvements. Council chief executive officer Cliff Houston said there was no point keeping the amounts on the books "because you'll never collect them". "It may be distasteful but it's the only practical solution."
