Snow ploughs trialled on Desert Road

Two snow ploughs have been put to work on the Desert Road in an effort to clear snow faster during road closures. Transit New Zealand area engineer Alan Burkett says Transit' s two contractors, each based at Waiouru and Turangi, are currently using the ploughs to see how they compare to traditional clear-

ing using graders. "The ploughs will also be used on other roads on the Central Plateau as required," Mr Burkett said. The plough (pictured on the right) has been brought up from the South Island, and is fitted to a truck which also distributes grit. The other plough has been imported by the contractor from Canada and is fitted to a standard truck.

Mr Burkett said snow ploughs can shift snow faster than graders. "To deal with light falls, the trucks may be able to travel at speeds of up to 50kmh, but our contractors need to test them in a variety of conditions before we know what results we can expect from them."
