$5000 in prizes offered for artistic effort

The Ohakune Art Awards, one of the country's most prestigious regional art awards exhibition, is gearing up for its 18th show. The awards are

open to North Island artists living between Levin in the south and Hamilton in the north and exhibiting works in oils, water colour and other media. The show has

attracted many artists of established reputation. The exhibition has grown steadily from its inception in 1978. Private sponsorship ena-

bles substantial awards to be made in all categories. In addition to the premier award of $2000, there are awards for life study, best entry from a permanent resident of the Ruapehu District, and a young artist award which is open to artists 18 years and younger. The exhibition will be held at the Ohakune Primary School Hall from 29 September 1 996 at 1pm and will concLude at 4pm on Saturday 5 October. The awards have become an established feature in the life of the town during spring. Schedules are available from public libraries in most towns or can be obtained directly from the convener, Ellen Gould, 49a Arawa Street, Ohakune.
