Park bridges replaced

Ageing bridges on the Ketetahi Track on Mt Tongariro and on the Rotopounamu track on Mt Pihanga were to be replaced last Thursday and although Department of Conservation staff hoped the work would be completed with a minimum of disruption, the uncertain nature of Mt Ruapehu' s ash fall could cause unscheduled interruptions. Already weather and ash fall had delayed the work

by almost a month. A helicopter was to be used to fly the preconstructed bridges into position. The bridges ara being replaced as part of an on-going maintenance programme in the conservancy. Because two large bridges were washed away during the September 1 995 eruptions of Mt Ruapehu and needed replacing, it was decided to bring forward other bridge replacement work.
