God's plate tectonics

• The current eruption of Mount Ruapehu has its origin in the break-up of the "super-continent" Gondwanaland. The after-effects of this continent splitting are seen in other areas of plate movement and volcanism around the world. I believe, together with others in the scientific community, that a global flood and the conversion of huge quantities of olivine rock to serpentine in the upper mantle initiated colossal earth movements and set the continents in motion; the residue of which we still see today. The global flood was an act of judgement by a just and loving God who could not stomach the violence, deceit and self-centredness of man any longer. I do not personally believe that the current eruption phase of Mt Ruapehu is a specific act of judgement on the people of the Waimarino. It is important to realise that we liveina 'groaning' world where death, decay and injustice prevail. This is not the way the universe was created, but is a result of mankind turning away from God. I sympathise and feel for the many hardworking people of this district whose livelihood has been put on the line as a result of the eruption. The mountain serves to show us how ineffective our plans and efforts can be in comparison

to the forces of nature. Let us also remember who created those forces of nature and that they are a constant reminder to us of the power of God and the rejection of Him by mankind. I welcome correspondence on views expressed above. David Waldron M.A. (Natural Sciences) M.Sc ( Geophysics) RD6 Raetihi
